Full of ideas and initiative, Alejo Pérez constantly seeks out new challenges. This search led the young Argentinean conductor, whose musical education began autodidactically as a child, from composition to conducting.
Alejo Pérez studied both composition and conducting, in addition to piano, in his home town of Buenos Aires. There, he founded Ensemble XXI, with whom he premiered his own compositions as well as a number of works by other Argentinean composers. By his early twenties, Alejo Pérez had already established himself as a regular guest conductor with the leading orchestras of Argentina. In 2009, he was appointed music director of the Teatro Argentino de La Plata, the most important opera house in Argentina after the Teatro Colón. Pérez also works regularly in Europe with major orchestras and ensembles.
Initially valued for his interpretations of contemporary music, Alejo Pérez has developed a large repertoire, spanning several centuries of music history. From 2005-07, Pérez was assistant conductor to Christoph von Dohnányi of the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg. His other orchestral engagements have included the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (Mozart, Wagner, Henze, 2006), Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Chile, Dresdner Philharmonie (Strauss, 2007), Orchestre National de Lille (Ravel, Piazzolla, Saint-Saens, 2008), musikFabrik Köln, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (Ultraschall Festival 2010). He also appeared as conductor for Ensemble Modern's project into Istanbul, with performances in Frankfurt, Berlin, Vienna, Essen, and Istanbul. Mark Andre, Beat Furrer, Samir Odeh-Tamimi and Vladimir Tarnopolski were commissioned to write compositions for the project. Last season, he successfully debuted with the Asko Schönberg Ensemble (Xenakis‘ Oresteia), Ensemble Contrechamps (Benjamin, Birtwistle und Harvey) and the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg (Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saens and Rimsky-Korsakov).
Alejo Pérez has worked in close collaboration with Peter Eötvös. He premiered two operas as Eötvös' assistant: Angels in America (Théâtre du Châtelet Paris) and Lady Sarashina (Opéra de Lyon, Opéra Comique Paris). Later on, he conducted Eötvös' opera Of Love and Other Demons in a production by the Glyndebourne Festival at the Lithuanian National Opera. Moreover, Alejo Pérez has conducted Matthias Pintscher's opera L'espace dernier (Opera Bastille Paris), a new production of Henze's opera Pollicino (Opéra de Lyon), Rihm's Jakob Lenz in Antwerp, as well as Maderna's Satyricon in Buenos Aires. His performance of Don Giovanni at the Opera Frankfurt met with great success. In Buenos Aires, September 2008, he devoted himself to early music, conducting a baroque ensemble on period instruments in a performance of Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride. He also led the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig in performances of Paul Dessau's oratorio Deutsches Miserere.
As music director of the venerable Teatro Argentino de La Plata, Alejo Pérez has been praised by the press and audiences alike for productions such as Verdi's Nabucco and Aida, Berlioz‘s Damnation of Faust and Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. In the 2011/12 season, he will conduct Tristan und Isolde and Don Carlos, and commence the house's production of the complete ring cycle with Rheingold.
Since last year, Alejo Pérez has been one of the main guest conductors at the Teatro Real Madrid and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, on invitation from Gerard Mortier. In 2012, he will work again with the orchestra in a concert version of Wagner's Rienzi as well as for a production of Golijov's opera Ainadamar. He started the season with his debut at Ensemble Intercontemporain and will return to the Opéra de Lyon for a new production of Stravinsky's Le Rossignol.
