The German soprano Caroline Stein's Medea was simply astonishing. Half-dramatic, half-coloratura, the role could have been a trial for a singer of lesser vocal and physical stamina. Stein was a fearless Medea, hurling impossibly high notes into the auditorium like steel javelins, she was brilliant and beautiful and bold.
