Eliahu Inbal
Born in Israel, Eliahu Inbal began his studies at the Jerusalem Academy and continued in Paris, Hilversum, and Siena with Franco Ferrara and Sergiu Celibidache. Since winning the first prize in the Cantelli Conducting Competition at the age of 26, Eliahu Inbal began his career performing with many of the leading orchestras in Europe, the United States, and Japan, and making regular appearances at international festivals.
From 1974 to 1990 he was Music Director of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he became Honorary Conductor in 1995. With his orchestra, he toured through Europe, the United States, and Japan, and recorded highly acclaimed complete cycles of Mahler, Bruckner, Berlioz, Schumann, Berg, Schönberg, Webern and Brahms. For his Mahler recordings, he received the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, the Grand Prix du Disc and the Prix Caecilia.
Equally successful are his complete recordings of Ravel with the National Orchestra of France, cycles of works by Dvořák and Stravinsky with the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the complete Shostakovich Symphonies with the Vienna Symphony, the orchestral works of Béla Bartók and the Symphonic Poems by Richard Strauss with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.
From 1995 to 2001, Eliahu Inbal was Chief Conductor of the National Symphony of the RAI in Torino, where he conducted concert performances of Wagner's Ring during 1997/98, a work for which he obtained the National Awards Premio Abbiati and Premio Viotti in 1998. From 2001 to 2006 he served as Music Director of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra after having regularly conducted the orchestra since 1992. With both orchestras, he toured to China, Korea and repeatedly to Japan, Spain and South America, receiving ovations in every country.
He has been honoured by the French Government as Officier des Arts et des Lettres (1990) and decorated with the Goldenes Ehrenzeichen in Vienna (2002), the Goethe-Plakette in Frankfurt as well as with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2006.
In January 2007, Eliahu Inbal was again appointed as Music Director of Teatro La Fenice, having previously held this post from 1984 to 1987. He also appeared at the Opera Houses in Munich, Hamburg, Verona and at the Glyndebourne Festival as well as conducting many new productions in Paris and Zurich. In 2009, he will conduct Lulu at the Teatro Real Madrid.
Following his appointment as Chief Conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra in April 2008, Eliahu Inbal will become Chief Conductor of another major orchestra rich in tradition, the Czech Philharmonic, from the 2009/2010 season. In addition, Inbal continues his collaboration with the Philharmonia Orchestra London, following the highly successful Mahler series with this orchestra in Tokyo in 2007. As a guest conductor, he resumes his Bruckner series at the Rheingau Musik Festival with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, and will also feature in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's Mahler festival in Amsterdam.
