Glorious Percussion

The ensemble Glorious Percussion takes its name from the piece that brought its members together in the first place. In September 2008, they gave the world premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina's Glorious Percussion, written for five percussionists and orchestra, with the Gothenburg Symphony under Gustavo Dudamel. For the members, who hail from three different continents, the name reflects the almost divine ability of their instruments to speak to cultures all over the world and throughout the ages.

The resounding success of the work's world premiere was quickly followed by the German and Swiss premieres with the Dresden Philharmonic under John Axelrod and the Lucerne Symphony under Jonathan Nott, as well as performances in 2009 with the Berlin Philharmonic. In February 2011, the ensemble performed the piece with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. Also last season, Glorious Percussion performed enthusiastically received country premieres with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of John Storgårds and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra under Gustavo Dudamel.

All five musicians are internationally renowned as chamber musicians and soloists and are also active with their own artistic agendas outside the group. Together, they plan to commission a series of new works over the coming years.
