Hinrich Alpers - piano

Following his debut at Carnegie Hall in March, 2008, a critic from the New York Sun raved about Hinrich Alpers, calling him "...a musician of the highest calibre," and imploring readers to "Remember this name: Hinrich Alpers." The young pianist has been living up to the expectations set by the critic's appraisal. In December, 2009, at the 3rd International Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn, Alpers won not only 1st Prize but also special prizes for chamber music (in a duo with Misha Maisky) and for interpretation of a contemporary composition. These successes quickly afforded him invitations to various world-renowned festivals and events, such as the Klavier-Festival Ruhr, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Beethovenfest Bonn.

Hinrich Alpers completed his studies at the Musikhochschule Hannover with Bernd Goetzke, a teacher of his since early childhood. He gained notoriety in North America while studying at the Juilliard School with Jerome Lowenthal as the winning laureate of the Honens International Piano Competition in 2006 in Calgary, Canada. The competition's laureates are offered a three-year career sponsorship, one result of which was the production of a CD featuring works by Robert Schumann. Alpers won both 1st prize and the special Grieg prize at the Concours Grieg in 2004 in Oslo. He was also a prize winner at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 2006. He has been awarded grants from the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Summer Academy of the Mozarteum Salzburg. In 2008 he won the Juilliard Petscheck Piano Debut Recital Award. In recent years, Alpers has been invited to participate in the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, as well as the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, and to play concerts at numerous concert houses, including the Berliner Philharmonie and the Gasteig München. He has also performed on various radio and TV stations.

The astonishing maturity and versatility of this young artist, whose never-superficial playing is full of both youthful energy and a deep seriousness, is evident through his deep and all-encompassing musical understanding. His interests range from the cornerstones of the piano literature to the works of lesser known "niche" composers. He is a devoted performer of works by composers in the Second Viennese School (Schönberg, Berg, Webern) and Karol Szymanowski, as well as works by younger composers such as Skrjabin and Toru Takemitsu. He is constantly premiering new works, including pieces by Benedict Mason and Daniel Schnyder.

Hinrich Alpers began the 2011/12 concert season with concerts in the USA as well as in Poland at the Gorzow Philharmonic, where he performed Beethoven's triple concerto as a guest of the Ludwig van Beethoven Association. He will ring in the new year with a tour of Asia with the Beethoven-Orchester Bonn, with concerts in Hongkong, Shanghai (Oriental Arts Center), Beijing (NCPA), Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Chengdu.

Hinrich Alpers currently holds a teaching position in piano, improvisation, and music theory at the Institute of Early Musical Development for musically talented children at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover. He has been a Steinway Artist since 2007. He lives in Berlin and in his free time enjoys photographing nature as well as involving himself in culinary pursuits and the natural sciences.
