Jeremias Schwarzer - recorder
Jeremias Schwarzer is without a doubt one of the leading recorder players of our time. Not only well-renowned for his work in the early music scene, he has particularly established himself as a dynamic force in contemporary music. The combination of his capacity to draw an unimaginably wide range of colours from his instruments and his extraordinary technical dexterity make him a specialist much in demand.
Moved by his desire to further expand the repertoire and enrich the expressive language of the recorder, Jeremias Schwarzer regularly commissions works from composers. His list of world premieres grew in recent seasons to over 50 with the first performances of concertos by Misato Mochizuki (Ensemble Resonanz), Samir Odeh-Tamimi (Munich Chamber Orchestra), Salvatore Sciarrino (Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala), and Annette Schlünz (with koto master Makiko Goto and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra).
As a soloist, Jeremias Schwarzer appears regularly at international festivals and in concert series such as the ISCM World Music Days, Belgrade Flute Festival, ZKM Karlsruhe, Exhibition of Contemporary Music in Tokyo, Midway Theater Boston, Cairo Opera House, CS Hall Seoul, and the Forum Neuer Musik in Cologne. His collaborations with ensembles and orchestras include projects with Musica Antiqua Köln, Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, the NDR Symphony Orchestra, and the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra.
Jeremias Schwarzer is the founder and director of the early music ensemble Vivi Felice and of the ensemble avantage, which specialises in contemporary music. Jeremias Schwarzer also works actively with Japanese Koto master Makiko Goto, focusing on interactive possibilities of the instruments and on the musical traditions of different cultures. Both this duo and the ensemble avantage have inspired many composers to write works for them.
Beyond his virtuosic performances on recorder, he is also sought-after for his conceptual work creating musical ‘settings' and exploring concert formats to facilitate a new sensual awareness for listeners and artists alike.
Born in 1969, Jeremias Schwarzer studied recorder in Frankfurt and Zurich. The extent of his talent was first recognised at the International Recorder Competition in Calw in 1992 where he won first prize both as a soloist and as an ensemble player, an astounding accomplishment especially since the first prize had never previously been awarded. In addition to numerous scholarships, Jeremias Schwarzer received the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation grant in 2006. He has been Professor of Recorder at the University of Nuremberg since 1994, as well as Guest Professor at the Universities of Vienna, Huddersfield, Freiburg, Belgrade, New York, Harvard, Mozarteum Salzburg, and the Irino Foundation in Tokyo.
This season, the full spectrum of Jeremias Schwarzer's musical activities can be heard. In addition to baroque chamber music concerts and productions he resumes his series of new recorder concertos. In October in Donauschingen he will premiere a work by the Australian composer Liza Lim (SWR Symphony Orchestra). Dai Fujikura is writing a new work for him, which he will perform in November with the Ensemble Resonanz in Amsterdam and Huddersfield. Furthermore, he will appear in March, 2011 with the hr-Symphony Orchestra as part of the "Forum for New Music", as well as at the Ruhrtriennale, performing in the world premiere of Samir Odeh-Tamimi's new opera Leila und Madschnun under the baton of Peter Rundel.
Following CD releases in recent years with Moeck, Cybele, and Valve Records, Schwarzer has begun a long-term collaboration with the label neos. This autumn, neos will release a CD of works written for Makiko Goto and Jeremias Schwarzer between 2006 and 2009. A solo album with works by John Cage is planned for 2011.
