Jihye Son - soprano
Following musical studies in her homeland of Korea, the young coloratura soprano Jihye Son went to Italy to continue her vocal training. As a student of Rita Orlandi Malaspina, she completed her degree in 2005 at the Milan Conservatory at the top of her class. She also studied at the Centro Universale del Bel Canto di Vignola with Mirella Freni, as well as at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia with Renata Scotto.
After winning several international competitions in 2004 (including 1st prize in the Concorso di canto lirico del Conservatorio di Milano "ASSAMI"), Jihye Son caught the attention of the classical music world and was quickly making herself at home on the opera stage. Among the many opera roles she has performed are Elisa in Mozart's Il re pastore, Carolina in Cimarosa's Il matrimonio segreto, Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, Adina in Donizetti's L'elisier d'amore, and the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor. Most recently, she was celebrated for her interpretation of Fusako in Hans Werner Henze's opera Gogo no Eiko at the Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto with the Orchestra sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi. Following two successful concerts in Princeton and Washington D.C. in January 2011, Jihye Son was immediately invited by the Zürich Chamber Orchestra to perform the main role of Angelica in J. Haydn's Orlando Paladino.
Jihye Son will be singing the roles of Sieglinde and Wellgunde in Ring Saga, a shortened, chamber ensemble version of Richard Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen. The production, conducted by Peter Rundel and directed by Antoine Gindt, will be performed at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, the Grand Théâtre in Luxembourg, the Casa da Música in Porto, and at the Festival Musica de Strasbourg in autumn 2011.
