Marc Soustrot is considered a specialist of French orchestral literature. Since early in his career, he has also been well known for his deep involvement with contemporary music. He has been the chief conductor and artistic director of the Orchestre Philharmonique des Pays de la Loire (1976 - 1994), the Beethoven Orchester Bonn (1995 - 2003) and Het Brabants Orkest Eindhoven (2996 - 2006). Starting in the 2011/2012 concert season, he will be the chief conductor of the Malmö Symfoniorkester, and will conduct the orchestra in their Swedish home base as well as on international tours.
As a guest conductor, Soustrot has worked with the Munich Philharmonic, the Bamberger Symphony, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Philharmoniker Hamburg, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, the Filharmonie Antwerpen and the Residentie Orkest Den Haag.
Marc Soustrot has many years of experience in the opera world and a vast operatic repertoire, including works such as Don Giovanni, Carmen, Werther, Pelléas et Mélisande, operas by Verdi and Puccini, Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen and Berg's Wozzeck. He is a specialist of Jacques Offenbach's operatic works and has successfully conducted a number of contemporary operas, such as Ernst Krenek's Karl V. He has conducted in the orchestra pits of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, the Teatro Real Madrid, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, La Monnaie de Munt, Det Kongelige Teater Kopenhagen and Den Norske Opera Oslo.
Highlights this season include concerts with the DR Symfoniorkestre, the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra KORK and the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla. Marc Soustrot will also conduct a new production of Francis Poulenc's Les Dialogues des Carmelites at the Stockholm Opera and a repertoire production of the same work at the Staatstheater Stuttgart, as well as Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus at the Frankfurt Opera.
Marc Soustrot has conducted on a number of prize winning recordings and was honoured with the title Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 2008.
Born in Lyon, Marc Soustrot studied trombone and piano at the Conservatoire de Lyon until 1969, when he began training as a conductor with Manuel Rosenthal in Paris.
