Maximilian Hornung - cello
With a fiery, bright tone, incredible bow-technique, and perfect intonation, he darted through the many runs and cascading spiccati of this always attractive Belle-Époque concerto, and managed not only to exude sweetness and sentimentality in the slow movement but also to do what is necessary to keep from overloading Saint-Saens' elegant melodic lines into the realm of banality - that is, he oozed with charm. Hornung kept the music moving forward and produced a winning performance in every respect. (Süddeutsche Zeitung)
With his striking musicality, instinctive stylistic certainty and musical maturity, the 26-year-old cellist Maximilian Hornung, whose career began when he won the German Music Council's Competition in 2005, is taking the international music scene by storm. The "beacon of hope for a new generation of musicians" (Die Zeit) received an ECHO Klassik prize as best newcomer of the year for his first Sony CD and was awarded a fellowship by the Borletti-Buitoni Trust in February 2012.
Maximilian Hornung regularly performs as a soloist with such renowned orchestras as the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra Moscow, Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Mozart Players under conductors such as Daniel Harding, Jiří Bělohlávek, Heinrich Schiff, Yakov Kreizberg and Vassily Sinaisky. His chamber music partners include Anne-Sophie Mutter, Christian Tetzlaff, Lisa Batiashvili, Francois Leleux, Maria Joao Pires and Lawrence Power. He has appeared at numerous festivals, including the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheingau, Lucerne, Verbier, Ravinia and Hong Kong festivals, and concerts have taken him to the philharmonic halls in Berlin, Cologne and Essen, as well as the Konzerthaus Vienna, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, KKL Lucerne and London's Wigmore Hall.
Highlights of the current and next seasons include concerts with the Staatsorchester Stuttgart under Manfred Honeck, his debuts at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and with the Beethoven Orchester Bonn, Prague Symphony, and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, as well as return invitations to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Bernard Haitink, Munich Symphony, Kammerakademie Potsdam, and the Württemberg and Munich Chamber Orchestras. He will also embark on a tour of Asia with Anne-Sophie Mutter.
Since 2010, Maximilian Hornung has held an exclusive recording contract with Sony Classical. His first CD received great critical acclaim and was recently followed up with the release of Dvorák's Cello Concerto in a recording with the Bamberg Symphony under Sebastian Tewinkel. He also recorded for Genuin, Bridge Records, CC ClassicClips and CPO.
Maximilian Hornung was born in 1986 in Augsburg, where he began taking cello lessons at the age of eight. The teachers with whom he has studied most intensely are Eldar Issakadze, Thomas Grossenbacher and David Geringas. As cellist of the Tecchler Trio, in which he played until 2011, he won the First Prize of the ARD Music Competition in 2007. Maximilian Hornung is supported and sponsored by the Anne-Sophie Mutter Circle of Friends Foundation.
