Orlando Misterioso

Nadja Michael has been praised by critics not only for the brilliance of her voice but also for her dramatic presence on stage. As a singer-actress she also breaks new ground with her Lied interpretations, her most recent creation being the programme ORLANDO MISTERIOSO.

A traditional Lied recital?

Orlando Misterioso certainly can't be characterised as such. A better description would be a theatrical recital that takes the audience on a journey in which the singer-actress Nadja Michael personifies the strong characters of Maria Stuart, Ophelia, Mignon and a Wayfarer. For Orlando's transformation, Nadja Michael has selected music of Wagner, Schumann, Wolf, Mahler and Strauss. In this process of transformation, the soprano casts off these various roles, layer by layer, until only the figure of the singer herself remains.

Orlando, a figure, based on the Virginia Woolf's novel, without beginning or end, a character through all ages and conditions, sets out on a delirious search for answers to the eternal themes of transience, meaning, power and love.

What makes this evening so unique is the typical Lied recital form with a scenic realization in combination with a unique application of sound and visual effects.

Another feature of the production is a series of photographs taken by the Sascha Kramer which are exhibited on the evening of the performance. A one hour documentary of Orlando Misterioso will be produced by the TV channel ARTE and broadcast at the end of 2008. Cool Opera and Katapult Production will also be creating a 20 minute art-clip-film of the project.
