El Cimarrón Ensemble
El Cimarrón
Hans Werner Henze/Hans Magnus Enzensberger
In Cuba in the nineteenth century, the word cimarrón meant escaped slave. The cimarrón in Henzes Recital for four musicians is Esteban Montejo. Born in 1860, he was interviewed by the Cuban ethnologist and writer Miguel Barnet at the age of 104. This documentation of his life, which touches on the wars for independence against Spain, the U.S. occupation, slavery, and loneliness, provided the material for Enzensberger's libretto.
Language: German; surtitles: English, Italian, Polish
For baritone, percussion, guitar, flute
Duration: 80 minutes + break
