Maya Beiser
Elsewhere
The cellist Maya Beiser has consistently challenged our conception of the traditional cello recital and of traditional cello repertoire through her multi-media performances featuring works commissioned especially for her. Her newest project, Elsewhere, continues the trajectory into unchartered territories. This psychological retelling of the biblical story of Lot's wife, paired with the voice of the female protagonist in Henri Michaux's apocalyptic poem I Am Writing to You from a Far-Off Country, is a powerful depiction of two women communicating across time, relating ancient and modern depictions of the apocalypse. Their voices come to us through Maya Beiser's cello and vocalist Helga Davis. Maya has assembled a team of innovators to make Elsewhere something truly remarkable. Karole Armitage is choreographing the "cello opera" and Robert Woodruff is directing. Video by Peter Nigrini and a set by Riccardo Hernandez add still another dimension to the project. The music has been composed by Eve Beglarian, Michael Gordon, and Missy Mazzoli.
Following workshop residencies at Mass MoCA and Emerson College, Elsewhere will be premiered on October 12, 2012 at the Carolina Performing Arts Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A series of performances will take place the following week at BAM in New York.
