Stefan Schulte received his first French horn lesson at the age of 10. He studied French horn at the music conservatories in Karlsruhe, Düsseldorf and Oslo and was a professional horn player with several German orchestras until 2004.
Parallel to working as a musician, Stefan Schulte studied philosophy and cultural studies at Witten/Herdecke University from 2002 to 2005, and completed a diploma course in culture and media management at the Hamburg Institute for Cultural and Media Management. His strong interest in Italian led him to Italy, where he attended the University of Siena (modules included philosophy and music and theater studies). Stefan Schulte gained practical experience in arts management as an intern in the Semper Opera Dresden's artist administration department and in the marketing department of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf. During this time, he also shadowed Willy Decker and Eike Gramss among others, and acted as Michael Hampe's assistant director for the revival of Mozart's Cosi fan tutte at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. After completing his studies at the Institute for Cultural and Media Management, Stefan Schulte worked as junior project manager at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden.
Since November 2009, Stefan Schulte has been part of Karsten Witt Musik Management as project manager in the touring and projects department.
